EEG/EMG/ECG/MEG Shielding

Faraday engineers can design, consult and construct a shielded solution specifically for the use within EEGs (electroencephalogram), ECGs (electrocardiogram), EMGs (electromyogram), or MEGs (magnetoencephalography). A variety of combinations are available as either copper or steel lined enclosures depending on your specific requirement.

All of these instruments have particular sensitivities which require electromagnetic shielding to prevent interference and malfunction or incorrect recording.

EEGs are used to record brain activity. Whether obtained from the scalp , the cortex of depths of the brain the signal levels are very low, in the order of microvolts. In addition, the frequency of the signals varies from a few hertz to less than a hundred hertz generally speaking.

The proper functioning of the EEG is vital for correct results. This means that a low ambient magnetic field is necessary for trouble-free operation.

In addition, electromagnetic interference or EMI is a problem that affects many devices and EEGs are no exception. In fact, EEGs are designed to receive very low-level signals and are therefore inherently sensitive to outside electromagnetic interference. The EEG may record incorrectly.

Furthermore, conducted interference remains a major problem for this class of equipment.

Typical sensitivities are shown below:

EMG, electromyogram , 20 uV.
ECG, electrocardiogram, 300uV.
ENG, electroneurogram, 10uV.
