Electromagnetic interference (EMI), is a disturbance generated by an external source that affects an electrical circuit by electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, or conduction.[1] The disturbance may degrade the performance of the circuit or even stop it from functioning
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the ability of electrical equipment and systems to function acceptably in their electromagnetic environment, by limiting the unintentional generation, propagation and reception of electromagnetic energy which may cause unwanted effects such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) or even physical damage in operational equipment
EMF shielding is used to shield Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMF) generate from switchboards, electric cabling, transformers etc. The EMF is generated from electric currents travelling through cables. Faraday will survey a site and deign shielding specific to that site to meet the exposure limits for magnetic fields at 50Hz as specified by ARPANSA in Radiation Health Series No. 30
An anechoic chamber is a room designed to completely absorb reflections of either sound or RF. The room is also isolated from waves entering from their surroundings. This combination means that the inside of the room is isolated from the outside. Uses for RF anechoic chambers include testing antennas, radars, and is typically used to house the antennas for performing measurements of antenna radiation patterns, electromagnetic interference.
Performance expectations (gain, efficiency, pattern characteristics, etc.) constitute primary challenges in designing stand alone or embedded antennas. Designs are becoming ever more complex with a single device incorporating multiple technologies such as cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, LTE, MIMO, RFID and GPS
An RF anechoic chamber is usually built into a screened room, an example of this is the Series 81 room provided by Faraday. The RF screened room will attenuate unwanted signals from outside the room penetrating to the inside.
An RF shielded room, also known as a Faraday Cage, is an enclosure used to block RF from entering. A Faraday shield may be formed by a continuous covering of conductive material. Effectiveness of the shielding is largely dependant on the build quality of the room. Small gaps in the shielding will allow RF to pass through. Faraday’s Series 81 Modular Shielded room offers a time proven design that has provided excellent EMI/RF shielding effectiveness for thousands of users.
